Uptown 101
Since 2004, the Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation has been providing educational and research opportunities for students both youth and adults. In 2004, Uptown produced a video with oral histories of neighborhood residents and entertainers on the experiences of the Uptown Theater. Six young people interviewed subjects, learned video production techniques and assisted in production of a video featured on the Uptown web site. In 2005 students from Eastern University did a year long project researching businesses and residents and interviewed residents on the projected use of the Uptown Theater for the 20th century. During the next year, a student from Philadelphia University interned with Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation to develop a media catalog and for several years, Linda Richardson, President of Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation has been interviewed by Temple Students for their courses on subjects ranging from media to urban studies. Last year, Uptown Entertainment & Development Corporation conducted a neighborhood walk with students from Philadelphia University. This project will be repeated for the 2009-2010 semester. In addition, the research and education program will be conducted in conjunction with Frator Heru Institute for the 2009 fall semester. This course will explore the history of the Uptown theater, the musicians and entertainers who performed at the Uptown and will add to the research already complied by the Uptown theater. We are excited that as we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Uptown Theater, we will continue with the legacy into the 21st century.
